My one year old is going through a picky eater phase that includes bread, crackers and yogurt. Occasionally, she lets me put something else on the plate, but those are her main staples at the moment. Obviously, it is hard for me to just feed her the same foods over and over. So, in an effort to increase her nutrition intake, I’ve been busy coming up with spreads, dips and add-ins to top these carbs and drop in the yogurt. Lucky for me, this is fine with her.

Now I’ve seen her eat some pretty strange food combinations as she mixes everything together and plays with her food. Rice & apples, yogurt and chicken, carrots and blueberries. But hey – whatever works. Today, I found a flavor combo I actually LOVED! So much I had to write about it! Avocado, Sweet Potato, Apple and Chicken.  So, for lunch I rolled up some Applegate Organic Chicken Meat (no nitrates) with avocado and some sweet potato and apple spread that I made earlier for breakfast  (also successful) and my daughter loved it! I tried a piece too – and liked it so much I made a sandwich with it. Strange, I know – but hey – give it a try!

Two other combos I would have never thought to like are rice & yogurt and chicken & yogurt. We combine yogurt with a lot of things here and these actually taste pretty good!  For a healthful snack, I cut up bananas and top them with cinnamon and ground flax-seed. She gobbles them up!

You don’t need a little one with picky taste buds in the house to experiment with food and try new things. Get in the kitchen and have some fun! And if you do have smaller kids around, let them do the work by creating their own “strange” meals – who knows, you may love it!
